
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has initiated plans to introduce a media enhancement bill aimed at improving the welfare of its members.
During the 2025 Easter Cantata Concert held in Abuja on Tuesday, the national president of the NUJ, Alhassan Abdullahi, announced the initiative.
The concert, organized by the NUJ Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, was themed “Renewal and Hope: Harnessing the Transformative Power of Unity and Progress.”
Mr. Abdullahi indicated that senior professionals in the field are currently drafting the media enhancement bill, which will soon be submitted to the National Assembly for consideration.
He expressed optimism that the passage of the bill would signify a new era for journalism in Nigeria, particularly in terms of improved remuneration for journalists.
In addition, the NUJ president encouraged journalists to engage in spiritual reflection during Easter and embrace a spirit of forgiveness.
He also urged them to prioritize issues of national unity and security to foster a peaceful Nigeria.
Leke Abejide, Chairman of the House Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise, highlighted the NUJ’s critical role in the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to transform Nigeria into a unified and prosperous nation.
He praised the current administration for its efforts to stimulate economic development and create a hopeful future for the country.
Ali Muhammad Ali, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), emphasized the need for journalists to embody the values of unity and transformation in their reporting.
He was represented at the event by Kayode Olaitan, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics at NAN.
Grace Ike, Chair of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT, argued that unity is essential for progress and encouraged journalists to leverage their unique roles to share stories that inspire, educate, and unite communities.

“Unity is the foundation for advancement and the glue that holds us together, enabling us to confront challenges with strength and resilience,”
she noted. “As journalists, we have a distinctive responsibility to promote unity through our storytelling.”
