Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have razed a police outpost, a primary healthcare facility and two classrooms at a primary school in Logomani community, Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack reportedly occurred late Tuesday night, shortly after the armed group launched an offensive against the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Logomani, where one soldier lost his life during the confrontation.
Residents said the assailants fired sporadically into the community, forcing people to flee before setting several public facilities on fire.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Muhammed Goni, disclosed that two military gun trucks and other combat equipment were damaged during the battle.
He said troops of Operation Hadin Kai stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Logomani, under Sector One, successfully repelled the attack.
The statement partly read, **“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Logomani in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State under Sector One successfully contained a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists.
“Although the insurgents briefly exploited a section of the base’s defensive perimeter during the intense firefight, the troops rapidly regrouped, mounted a determined counter-offensive and decisively expelled the attackers, inflicting significant casualties and forcing the surviving terrorists to flee with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
“Regrettably, one gallant soldier paid the supreme price, while two gun trucks and some combat enablers sustained damage during the engagement.”**
According to the military spokesperson, troops remain firmly in control of the Forward Operating Base in Logomani. He added that reinforcements have been deployed, clearance operations are continuing, and additional defensive measures are being put in place to strengthen the position against future attacks.
Residents who spoke with PUNCH Online described the assault as well-planned and coordinated, alleging that the insurgents encountered minimal resistance before moving into the community.
One resident, who requested anonymity, said, “We all left the community during the attack. The terrorists were very sophisticated. After they overpowered the Army, they entered the school and burnt down two classrooms. They also attacked a police outpost and a hospital, which they burnt down.”
A local security source disclosed that a joint security team made up of the Nigerian Army, the Police and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force pursued the fleeing attackers after the assault.
The source added, “They had fled a considerable distance.”
Following the incident, the Executive Chairman of Ngala Local Government Council, Mala Tijjani Ngala, visited Logomani on Wednesday to assess the level of destruction.
During the visit, the chairman inspected the damaged police outpost, the primary healthcare centre and the affected primary school.
He stated that the outcome of the assessment would be submitted to the Borno State Government to facilitate prompt intervention and support for the affected community.
Ngala also appealed to residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts to restore normalcy continue.
