Deji Adeyanju Raises Alarm Over Alleged Threats to Comedian Sarkin Dariya, Demands Authorities Ensure His Safety

Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has issued a public statement expressing concern over alleged threats to the safety of Nigerian comedian and social commentator, Oguche Ugbede Kenneth, popularly known as Sarkin Dariya.

In a statement released by Deji Adeyanju & Partners on Tuesday, the law firm said it is acting as solicitors to Sarkin Dariya and disclosed that the comedian has allegedly been receiving threats following his recent satirical and comedic commentaries on matters of public concern affecting Nigerians.

The statement noted that the threats directed at their client have become a serious concern, stressing that Sarkin Dariya has exercised his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression through lawful means.

“Our attention has been drawn to a series of threats directed at our client following his recent satirical and comedic commentaries on issues of public concern affecting Nigerians,” the statement read.

The law firm argued that the alleged threats amount to an attack on the comedian’s constitutional rights and called on the relevant authorities to fulfill their responsibility of protecting his life and security.

According to the statement, security agencies have been placed on notice of their constitutional duty to ensure Sarkin Dariya’s safety.

“Should any harm befall him as a result of these threats or any failure to provide adequate protection, all those found to be responsible, whether directly or indirectly, will be held fully accountable in accordance with the law,” the statement warned.

Adeyanju further expressed confidence that the appropriate authorities would take the necessary steps to guarantee the safety of his client.
