Speeding Driver Kills Pedestrian in Lagos, Arrested by Authorities

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a driver who fatally struck a female pedestrian on Sunday at Mosalasi Roundabout along New Ipaja Road in Lagos.
According to a statement from LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the tragic incident involved a black Toyota Tundra (registration number FST 222 HV), which lost control due to excessive speed, veered off the road, and mounted a pedestrian walkway, hitting the woman who died instantly.
“The lone crash, caused by dangerous speeding, occurred when the vehicle veered off the main road and struck a yet-to-be-identified woman.
The force of the impact led to her immediate death,” Taofiq said.
After hitting the pedestrian, the vehicle continued on its path, crashing into a livestock business premises, destroying part of its perimeter fence and damaging a nearby billboard.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene, but LASTMA officials quickly intervened and apprehended him.
He was then handed over to police officers from the Gowon Estate Command, who were already at the scene.
“The prompt response by our officers ensured the suspect could not escape justice,” Taofiq added.
The remains of the deceased were taken by the police for proper handling, while the driver remains in custody and is being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.
“This heartbreaking event highlights the severe consequences of reckless driving. We stand with the family of the deceased and pray for their strength during this difficult time,” Bakare-Oki stated.
