Peter Obi Sue Kenneth Okonkwo Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks, Demands ₦5bn Damages

The political atmosphere ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections has become increasingly tense following the emergence of a legal dispute between the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his former political associate, Kenneth Okonkwo.

Obi has initiated legal action against Okonkwo, seeking ₦5 billion in damages over statements allegedly made by the actor-politician during a television interview. According to Obi’s legal representatives, the remarks constitute a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation and political standing.

The controversy arose from an appearance by Okonkwo on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on June 8, 2026. During the interview, he reportedly made several allegations concerning Obi’s conduct and the internal affairs of the NDC.

In a letter dated June 9, 2026, and signed by Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) on behalf of Obi, the legal team identified a number of statements they consider defamatory. Among them was an allegation that Obi, together with certain NDC leaders in the South-East, demanded ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants despite the candidates having already paid the required fees for nomination and expression of interest forms.

The lawyers also cited claims that Obi personally selected party candidates from a hotel room, bypassing established party processes and structures. Okonkwo was further accused of describing Obi’s political activities as a “scam” and alleging that the former Anambra State governor travelled overseas to solicit funds from individuals under misleading circumstances.

Obi’s legal team strongly rejected the accusations, describing them as baseless, malicious, and unsupported by evidence. According to the lawyers, the comments were intended to portray the NDC flagbearer as dishonest and corrupt, thereby undermining public confidence in his leadership credentials.

The letter emphasized that while freedom of speech remains a constitutional right, it does not grant individuals the liberty to make false and damaging allegations against others. Obi’s lawyers argued that his reputation for integrity and transparency is a crucial aspect of his public image, making the alleged statements particularly harmful.

As part of the demands issued to Okonkwo, Obi is requesting a clear and unconditional public apology. The apology is expected to be broadcast on Channels Television and published across Okonkwo’s verified social media platforms, including X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

In addition to the apology and retraction, Obi is seeking ₦5 billion in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages for the alleged harm caused to his reputation and emotional well-being. The legal notice warns that failure to comply within seven days could lead to formal court proceedings, including requests for injunctions and the recovery of legal expenses.

The dispute represents a dramatic deterioration in the relationship between the two men, who once worked closely together. Okonkwo played a prominent role in Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, serving as a spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organization before later distancing himself amid disagreements over party leadership and strategy.

Observers believe the legal move signals a tougher approach by Obi’s camp toward critics and political opponents as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum. Analysts suggest the lawsuit reflects an effort to deter what supporters view as politically motivated attacks on the candidate’s character.

At the time of reporting, Okonkwo had not publicly responded to the legal demands. However, individuals familiar with his position indicate that he stands by the comments he made during the television interview. The matter is now shaping up to be one of the most high-profile political legal battles in the lead-up to the next general election.
