In a move signaling a shift, President Bola Tinubu has named Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda as the new APC National Chairman, according to party sources.
This decision ends the search for a successor to Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned citing health reasons. A National Working Committee member told Daily Sun that Yilwatda was chosen specifically because party leaders sought a “democrat” to lead, moving away from the typical political operators who previously held the role.
The source also highlighted the strategic importance of selecting Yilwatda, a Christian, to correct perceived religious imbalances within the party’s national leadership. His appointment was finalized after a Wednesday night meeting at the Presidential Villa involving President Tinubu, APC governors, and other stakeholders, preceding today’s crucial NEC meeting.
Yilwatda, the APC’s Plateau governorship candidate in 2023 and a former INEC Commissioner for Benue State, brings both administrative and electoral experience to the role, bolstered by his professional background as an engineer.
