Tension gripped parts of Abuja on Thursday as Nafiu Bala Gombe and a sitting lawmaker, Leke Abejide, reportedly vacated the protest ground upon learning that Dino Melaye was leading a separate demonstration to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to sources, Gombe and Abejide had earlier assembled supporters as part of their faction’s ongoing agitation within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). However, the situation took a sudden turn when intelligence emerged that Melaye, aligned with a rival bloc, was advancing toward the same location with his own supporters.
Eyewitnesses said the Gombe-led group dispersed quickly, with both leaders leaving the scene to avoid a potential clash between the opposing factions. The hurried exit highlighted growing fears of confrontation amid escalating tensions within the party.
The incident reflects the deepening internal crisis rocking the ADC, as competing factions continue to battle for control and recognition. Meanwhile, security operatives have intensified their presence around the INEC headquarters to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
