Nafiu Bala Gombe, the disputed claimant to the chairmanship of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has reportedly expressed deep regret over his part in the party’s leadership crisis, accusing Hon. Leke Abejide and Babachir Lawal of drawing him into the controversy.
A close associate, Nafiu Umaru, who spoke in Abuja, said Gombe disclosed that the crisis has brought serious threats against him and his family, forcing him to limit public appearances, including attendance at congregational prayers because of security fears.
According to Umaru, Gombe said several assurances given to him at the start of the dispute were never honoured, and he now wishes he had never become involved.
He also allegedly claimed that Hon. Abejide distanced himself after exiting the party, leaving him to face the fallout alone, while Babachir Lawal was accused of influencing decisions that deepened the internal conflict.
Gombe was further said to be disappointed that no significant political reward came from his involvement, apart from limited financial assistance said to have covered some legal costs.
Sources close to him say he is now considering withdrawing from the ongoing court matter in order to restore peace and move on with his life.
Umaru added that he advised Gombe to formally step away from the case and publicly apologise, noting that Gombe admitted participating in actions that intensified the power struggle involving David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola.
He also revealed that Gombe plans to make a public statement soon to defend his reputation and distance himself from the lingering controversy.
